Friendly Neighborhood
Spider-man is heading for Kid's WB! If this show follows the WB tradition of such shows as Batman, Superman, X-men Evolution, and Legion of Superheroes, we could have a hit on our hands.
Like I said, we'll agree to disagree. Spider-man has always been about the angst of being Peter Parker. If that aspect of the hero doesn't appeal to you, you're obviously going to dislike the movies.
And I can't believe you liked X3 better than Spider-man. That film was dreadful. What a convoluted mess.
I agree that Superman Returns*, X2, and Batman Begins were excellent.
*Talk about too much pathos. The kid storyline nearly ruined the film for me. I just pretend that aspect of the film doesn't exist. The rest of the film is brilliant.
Superman Returns, by most reasonable accounts, was dreadful. The claim that the Spider-Man movies weren't true to the comics (1 and 2 are the "truest" of any superhero movie) is silly. It really is. It says to me that Lord Mhoram has never read a Spider-Man comic.
It is insulting to call Superman Returns one of the best comic-to-movie adaptations of recent years (of any years)! Superman has a bastard child and Lois Lane is shacking up with a man she's not married to and you both call this a great adaptation?!?
I haven't seen Superman Returns. As soon as I heard about the kid thing and the Lois thing, that was that. No interest. If only Singer had the respect for the source material that Raimi had with Spidey 1 and 2. Isn't it funny that Singer got it so right with X-Men 1 and 2 yet fumbled so badly with Supes Returns?
As for too much pathos, Batman Begins had plenty of that, LM. Must be that anti-Marvel bias bubbling to the surface again (the irony, of course, is that Batman would be a very boring character without the influence of Marvel Comics, which in turn would have made Batman Begins, which LM praises, a boring movie).
I'm a big FF fan and have no interest in seeing the FF movies. What little I have seen turned me off right away. It doesn't feel like the FF from the comics (though I must admit the casting for the parts of Johnny and Ben were perfect).
Ghost Rider? No interest. Never seen Daredevil (hell, even if the movie was perfectly lifted from the comics, I doubt I'd see it--Daredevil has never done it for me). X2 was messy though I was tickled to see that Kelsey Grammar was cast as Beast. The most perfect casting decision EVER!
I know it's just Lord Mhoram's opinion versus mine but I seriously have to question LM's judgment when he praises Superman Returns and bashes Spider-Man.
I never said SM was a poor adaption. It was an excellent adaption, one of a comic where there were themetic elements I really don't like - and the movie focused on the themetic elements.
As for SR - it was a sequal to the first two Chris Reeve Superman movies - the kid is the result of them being together in Superman 2.
I actually walked out of the first Spider-man movie wanting my 2 hours and money back. I watch it on DVD and cut out about 45 minutes I enjoy it. :)
I don't it as an anti marvel bias - I like a lot of Marvel Movies, just not Spider-man. :)
And I am off to see Rise of the Silver Surfer in about an hour. :)
I've still never seen Spider-Man 2, strange as that sounds. We borrowed the DVD from my brother-in-law several weeks ago, just haven;t watched it yet. Now that he's moved to Vegas, I guess there's no rush to get it back to him....
As for the others: X-Men and X2 were both a lot of fun, and I enjoyed them immensely. As for X3, well, check the archives. I've already reviewed that one. I was perhaps a little generous in my review; I gave it a B-.
I never saw Daredevil.
I enjoyed Ghost Rider, even though I never read the comic growing up. Nicholas Cage and Sam Elliott made it all worthwhile, and the final confrontation between Blaze and the Devil was well-executed. Have to love the Penance Stare.
I REALLY enjoyed The Hulk. I enjoyed it so much that even though the final fight scene was too convoluted and ruined by bad lighting and substandard CGI, I still liked it better than a lot of other superhero movies.
FF was pretty decent, too. The high point was, as Joe alluded to, the casting. Michael Chiklis. 'Nuff said.
Having said all that, I have to conclude by saying I thought the two best superhero movies of the last few years have both been original material rather than adaptations:

Well, you and I will have to disagree on that account. While the 3rd film sucked, I thought the 1st two were spot on Spider-man.
They were spot on bad spider-man. When there was too much pathos in the comic. Too much dump on Peter, not enough fun in tights. :)
I always get that reaction, I like Daredevil, FF, Ghost Rider, and X3 better than any of the Spider-man movies.
But that is something of an old axe I grind, and I'm sure Mike is sick of it by now. :)
